My husband’s family owns a century year-old produce farm in Waldorf, MD called Shlagel Farms. We are lucky enough to live, eat and breathe the farm life and have freshly picked produce year-round. We have especially enjoyed the bounty during these last few months of being home.
Shlagel Farms is primarily known for the pick-your-own strawberry patch open during the month of May. This year was a record breaking year due to the fact that so many people were looking for a socially-distant activity for themselves and their family. The farm offered the opportunity for families to take a drive, experience farm life and enjoy freshly picked produce.
We are so excited to now be into our second year of blackberry picking! We had a soft-opening last year as the blackberries were just starting to mature. This year, the crop is bountiful and we’ve been able to open a few times a week since mid-July. Blackberry season lasts for quite a while and will run all the way up to September. After that comes pumpkins! (My personal favorite time of year.)
But for now, we are enjoying lots of fresh fruit and veggies, whipping up blackberry recipes and making the best of these hot & humid summer days on the farm.
Come see us at the farm! Stay up-to-date via our Facebook page to get the latest information and hours of operation.
